Invasive spiny-cheek crayfish from the Danube as an innovative alternative to plastic packaging

DANUBEcare member, Professor Senka Popović from the Faculty of Technology Novi Sad, gave an interview in Ambipak magazine, where she elaborated on the potential of extracting chitin and chitosan from spiny-cheek crayfish shells as a sustainable alternative for packaging solutions. She highlighted how these natural biopolymers, derived from waste materials, could play a crucial role in reducing plastic consumption. By incorporating chitin and chitosan into packaging production, it is possible to significantly cut down plastic waste, promoting a more sustainable and eco-friendly approach to packaging. Professor Popović emphasized that this innovation represents a major step toward a greener future by leveraging waste to create valuable, environmentally friendly materials. Read the full article HERE
